... was born Angela Dorothea Kasner, in 1954. She married Ulrich Merkel, a physics student, in 1977; they divorced in 1982. She first met chemistry professor Joachim Sauer in 1981; they married in 1998, by which time she had been a member of the Bundestag and a government minister for seven years. She became Leader of the Christian Democratic Union in 2000, and Chancellor of Germany in 2005. She has two stepsons, but no children of her own.
